Lady Euphronia touched the end of the pen to her chin and looked into the far distance at nothing at all. She thought for a moment and then added—

You will, of course, tell me I’m a widget to get myself in such a stew about what is obviously nonsense. James and Kathryn will wed, as planned, come the autumn little season and then I shall be able to breathe freely once again.

Euphronia reread what she’d written and felt much better. Just telling her fears to another was enough to ease them. Something about a fear shared was a fear halved? That didn’t sound quite right but the sentiment fit. Her ladyship went to bed feeling far more at ease than she had upon her arrival home.

Kathryn however, went to bed and tossed and turned and felt thoroughly ill used. Not only had she been forced to bear far more of that horrid Lord Aron but Patrick, with whom she had hoped to have at least a few moments in which they might plan their next meeting at the stables… Well, Patrick had ignored her. There was no other word for it. In fact the one time she approached him, he turned away and moved into a group of local men discussing the problems of keeping proper coverts available. Kathryn knew it was a subject in which Patrick had no interest, so she knew his avoidance of her had been deliberate.

She was hurt. Deeply hurt. She’d been very nearly certain Patrick felt about her as she felt about him and she’d looked forward to this evening’s chance to test those new emotions.

I guess they were tested she concluded and suppressed a groan. I was wrong. He doesn’t feel a thing for me…

The evening ended, Patrick and his guests returned to the hunting box where Jenna had remained. She was obviously tired, so Jacob, feeling guilty he’d not thought of her all evening, instantly offered to carry her upstairs.

“You look like you used to do when a mere boy and feeling guilty about something,” said Jenna, peering up at her niece’s husband.

He grinned. “I suppose that is because I do. You, I’m certain, wished to go to bed hours ago and here we are just now arriving home.”

“Patrick’s man offered to carry me up. I could have gone at any time, so put that guilt away where it belongs. On the other hand,” said Jenna, “I believe I’m now ready to go, so if you were thinking of joining Patrick for a nightcap, then you’ll have to return downstairs to do so.”

Verity followed Jacob and Jenna up the stairs. She gave her husband of a kiss and sent him off before joining Jenna in her room to help her into her nightgown.

“Tell me about the evening,” said Jenna, already undoing the buttons and tapes she could reach.

Verity did so. Then, finished, she adopted a thoughtful look.

“What is it?” asked Jenna.

“What do you know of Lady Kathryn Breden?” asked Verity.
